Guidance for a good life and a good living
I believe therapists can be deeply fulfilled and make a good living.
In 2018, I was newly remarried and my solo private practice revenue was 44k. In California, this made supporting a family very difficult, and I was freaking out. So I started making some changes. And I more than doubled my income the following year. And every year thereafter, I have had revenue comfortably over 100k.
But here's the kicker. Throughout this growth season, I've rarely averaged more than 15 client hours per week. I don't work weekends and I take good vacation time every year. I'm able to be there for my wife and daughter, for my parents and in laws, and for my friends and church, because of the flexibility and slower pace of my schedule.
My intention in writing all this is to provide some hope to some of you, that it's possible to have good sustainable revenue in this field without over-extending yourself.
That being said
I'm hoping to spend the latter part of my career helping therapists in the early and intermediate stages of their solo practice career get good compensation for your education and service. (This is my generativity vs stagnation stage of development!) I know that many of you are amazing clinicians, but sometimes our competence doesn't translate into revenue. I think we should be compensated well for being helpers, and we shouldn't feel guilty about it.
